Tomica display cases and storage
Tomica are small enough that storage is rarely a problem for the first fifty cars, and then suddenly becomes the main problem. This guide covers the four common storage approaches and how much space each needs.
How much space does one car take?
A standard Tomica casting is about 75 mm long and 32 mm wide. That means roughly 13 cars fit in a single row per metre of shelf. Keep the car in its box and it becomes about 115 mm by 45 mm, so you fit around eight per metre.
The catch is that Tomica are not all the same size. A kei car is much shorter than a Land Cruiser, and a Long Type bus is longer again. Any capacity figure is an estimate — measure your own shelf and check your longest car.
The four main options
Counter-top acrylic cases are cheap and keep dust off, and work well up to about 60 cars. Wall-mounted shelves are the most popular option for serious collectors because they show the side profile of the cars and use vertical space. Stackable storage boxes are the cheapest per car but you cannot see the collection. Carrying cases with trays are for children who want to take cars with them rather than display them.
- Counter-top acrylic case — roughly 20 to 60 cars, best for small collections
- Wall-mounted display shelf — roughly 40 to 120 cars, best for showing cars
- Stackable storage box — roughly 30 to 50 cars per box, best for bulk storage
- Carrying case with trays — roughly 24 to 48 cars, best for travel and play
Official cases versus generic ones
Takara Tomy and third-party Japanese makers produce Tomica-branded display cases and garages. They fit the cars properly and look right next to the rest of the range, but they are priced for the Japanese market and can be expensive to import.
Generic 1/64 acrylic cases and nail-polish or collectible display shelves often cost a fraction of the price and hold the same number of cars. If you care about fit and branding, buy official. If you just want the cars protected and visible, generic is usually the better value.
Keeping cars in good condition
Avoid direct sunlight, which fades printed details and yellows white paint. Avoid damp, which corrodes bare metal. If cars are stored loose together, wrap them or use slotted trays, because paint chips from car-on-car contact are the most common damage in a collection that is moved around.
Questions
How many Tomica fit in one display case?
It depends entirely on the case. A small counter-top acrylic case holds roughly 20 to 60 cars; a wall shelf row holds about 25 to 30 cars per metre.
Do I need a special Tomica case?
No. Any 1/64 scale display case or shelf with enough depth will work. Official cases fit better and look consistent, but generic ones are cheaper.
Should I display cars in or out of the box?
In the box protects them and preserves value, but takes about twice the space. Most collectors display loose and store the boxes flat.
